Did You Know? September 19th through September 25th is Turn Off Your TV Week!
Home Care Activities in Beverly Hills, CA
The week of September 19 through the 25th is considered Turn Off Your TV Week and it is a good time to remember that there is a whole bunch of life to be lived beyond the TV screen. For someone who requires home care services, they may feel isolated or limited in the things that they can do.
Yet with the right level of care and an experienced in-home care provider, the elderly patient should be able to take part in a variety of activities. While they aren’t going to be able to do some of the things they used to enjoy, that doesn’t mean they have to stop doing everything altogether.
It is far too easy to decide to sit down in front of the TV and let the programs distract you, but it also erodes your life. The more TV that someone watches, the higher the risk of obesity, depression, and other diseases that can affect health and well-being. This goes for anyone of any age.
For the elderly individual who is relying on home care services, there are many things that they can do besides watching TV.
Determine how much TV the elderly patient watches.
Whether you are concerned about your aging parent or if you are an in-home care provider hired to work with someone, take an observation about how much TV the individual watches on average every day and then every week.
You can then ask them how much TV they feel they watch on a daily basis. You may be surprised to find that they almost always underestimate the amount of TV they watch.
Every hour spent in front of the TV is another hour that they miss out on some of the best things that life has to offer.
Do a puzzle or play a game.
The in-home care provider is not just there to sit around and support the patient when he or she needs to get up, go to the bathroom, or prepare a meal. The caregiver can play games and encourage the patient to take part in a variety of activities.
Doing a puzzle will not only help the patient feel as though he or she accomplished something, but it will also encourage them to use their brain more often. The more exercise the brain gets, the better an individual feels because of the dopamine that gets released from increased mental activities.
So for the week of September 19 through the 25th, encourage the patient to turn off the TV and do other things instead.
