There was a situation that I found myself in during the past few months while caring for my mother. I am a full time, working mother of two myself, the youngest of three children. Since, both of my siblings live on the other side of the country, and my mother required help at home, I stepped up. It seemed like the right thing to do. However, as she requires more care during the day while I’m working, I was trying to determine whether I could hire some level of home care services to be there for her during these hours.

I work within the financial industry, so I already knew that there’s a wealth of information online that can answer just about any question that a person has about so many topics. I figured I would be able to quickly and easily find the answer to this question as well. I was wrong.

The problem that I ran into while trying to determine whether my mother would be able to have an in home care provider to be there with her for just a few hours during the day, was that I approached it from the perspective that I was already caring for her. It caused me to have to change the keywords that I used when I began searching for that information.

What I learned was a relief. Yes, it’s possible that my mother can have access to an in home care provider for just about any time during the day, and even during the evening. While we could certainly look for an independent caregiver, it makes more sense for our situation to hire through an agency, as they have more resources that could fit the schedule that we need more effectively.

I also learned that I could drop my mother off at a couple of different adult day facilities. Some of these are open at 7am and close at 6pm. They offer a host of activities that my mother could participate in as well as classes, such as beginning art. There are so many options that we can use to help improve her care while I’m at work.

If you’re wondering what home care services your elderly loved one could rely on during the day, the answer is simple: just about anything that he or she needs. Once I found this out, I was relieved and my mother was thrilled. We’re actually relying on a caregiver two days a week and the other three my mother goes and hangs with new friends at adult day facilities.

Home care services can be a great idea for any elderly individuals who are living alone and spend too much time by themselves, especially eating alone.

There’s no one answer to the question of when the time is right for in-home care.
